H1N1 is a type of Flu virus. It is also known as Swine Flu. It is spread through droplets in the air from the cough or sneeze of an infected person. It can also spread by direct contact with object touched by an infected person who didn’t wash their hands.

Signs and symptoms of H1N1 infection

  • Can look like regular flu
  • Fever (Not always)
  • Chills (ague)
  • Cough
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Body aches ( joints & muscles)
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea

H1N1 can get complicated in

  • The elderly
  • Children
  • Pregnant women
  • Persons with HIV infection
  • Diabetics
  • Asthmatics
  • Persons with Cancer

Complications of H1N1

  • Bronchitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Severe life-threatening Asthma
  • Fluid collecting around the heart
  • Infection of the heart muscle
  • Severe life-threatening muscle damage
  • Toxic shock syndrome (blood poisoning)
  • Worsening of chronic illness e.g. Diabetes
  • Seizures
  • Brain infection
